A Conscious Conservative Veterans Day

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918 hostilities were officially ended in Western Europe.  This signified the end of World War I.  Rural areas of the United States still did not have phone service.  People put bells on tall poles in their yards.  These bells acted as an information system.  My grandmother told me several times that one thing she would never forget was the sound of hundreds of bells ringing across the countryside.  The bells signified that the war was over and thousands of young men would be returning home.

The following year, "Armistice" was celebrated at Buckingham Palace and countries across the world passed legislation officially recognizing November 11th as a holiday.  Although official proclamations and ceremonies supporting the holiday began in 1919, the United States didn't make Armistice Day a legal holiday until 1938.  The original language states that November 11th is "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace."

World War I was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Unfortunately, the seeds of World War II were planted in the peace of World War I.  Politicians and profiteers have continually found reasons to wage war in the almost hundred years since the "last war" ended.  The United States changed the original name of  Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954

As you enjoy your day away from work, take in a parade or thank those who have served our country, please remember the original spirit of Veterans Day.  Let's stay dedicated to the cause of world peace so that those who so proudly and bravely serve our country will never be put in harm's way again.
